3 years ago today I was in a hotel getting ready to marry the love of my life. I was anxious, excited, and couldn’t wait to walk down that aisle and see him waiting for me.
In honor of the best day ever, I want to share with you our love story and just give you a little insight into our personal life.
Well, lets get to it, our love story …
How we met
Our sophomore year my best friend Morgan and I were hanging out after school and all of a sudden a very cute boy runs past us. Of course I immediately tell my bestie, “OMG he’s cute.”
I had never seen him before around school so I was like where has this cutie been? After I shared that with her privately she decided to wave him down and let him know how I felt. Yeah, I was pretty embarrassed at the time but she told him I thought he was cute.
While she actually yelled it across the campus because remember he was running past us LOL.
She asked him for his name and she told him mine. He was running because my Mother-in-Law was waiting to pick him up and he just told us he had to go.
Later that night I logged on to Myspace and saw that I had a message. Yes, I said Myspace LOL. Anyway, I had a message from him. I was so excited because he had found me. We were exchanging messages and in the midst of that he tells me he has a girlfriend.
I’m like wait, what? His girlfriend was actually a childhood friend of mine and I even shared a class with her. She had never shared that she had a boyfriend nor did I ever see him with her.
Well, that pretty much ended things and I told my friend I had met her boyfriend. She was surprised and wanted to know when/where I met him and how I even knew they were together. My childhood friend and I were not as close as we once were which meant we barely hung out the rest of the year.
All of this happened our Sophomore year and I literally never saw him again until Senior Year.
We meet again
Fast forward to our Senior year and a friend from high school was throwing a house party in September. Yes, in high school a house party is probably the coolest thing. By this time he was single and was attending his very first house party.
We both went to this party and somehow we end up dancing together. I end up dancing with him for the rest of the night until the party was broken up. In that moment I didn’t want to leave and made him stay next to me long after everyone was leaving. Eventually, both of our rides were leaving and we said good bye.
The following Monday after the party he came up to me, walked me to class, and several of our friends that saw us dancing were making faces at us. You know the, “we saw you guys dancing at the party,” face. I had butterflies every time I saw him, every time I hugged him, and I pretty much any time I talked to him on campus.
If you remember the high school schedule, homecoming usually falls in October and I actually did not have a date. I actually usually never have a date and was never that “hot” girl everyone was dying to go out with.
He ends up getting my number from one of our mutual friends and sends me a text, read below for our very high school conversation.
Him:“Do you have a date to homecoming?”
Me: “Depends who’s asking.”
Him: “It’s Cesar
Me: __________’s ex?
Him: Yes.
Me: OH. Well, no I don’t.
Him: Do you want to go with me?
Me: Yeah Sure
Him: I’m going to ask you formally I just wanted to make sure you wanted to go with me.
Me: So when people ask me if I have a date, what should I say?
Him: You say YES
Now, that is a recollection of what happened I obviously can’t remember the exact text messages but that was pretty darn close. So I was excited, I actually had a date to homecoming. He ended up formally asking during my soccer practice and my co-captain helped him plan it out.
The drama
Shortly after, the news had spread that we were going together and that is when some of the drama started to happen. My childhood friend confronted me about going with her ex because I didn’t personally tell her. I told her that we were simply just friends and that there was nothing else going on.
At the time that’s what I kept telling myself, we were just friends. We talked on the phone almost all the time and were always texting each other. By the time homecoming rolled around I already had so many feelings for him, I just couldn’t deny it.
Homecoming was amazing and he actually knows how to dance which was a deal breaker for me LOL, JK. After homecoming we kept talking, hanging out at school, and I definitely had full blown feelings for him.
Asking me to be his girlfriend
A month after Homecoming, he invited me to his friends house and we were all just hanging out. He asked a friend to bake a cake for him and decorate it with, “will you be my girlfriend?” I’m assuming he was trying to find the perfect time to give it to me and he waited until I went to the restroom. Well, when I came out, there he was down on one knee with the cake in his hands. It kind of seemed like a proposal and his friends made fun of him for it. Anyway, I said Yes! I was all happy & giddy and had an actual boyfriend for the first time. Yes I had “talked” to guys before but never an official boyfriend.
Our official first anniversary was November 20, 2007 and we still celebrate it today.
I had such strong feelings for him and that basically ended any relationship I had with my childhood friend. I chose him over her and I obviously still stand by that decision, hello we’re married! At that time some people were obviously not a fan but my close friends cheered me on.
Who said I love you First?
A month into our relationship I went to Mexico with my family for Christmas and he had to buy a calling card to talk to me. We would talk all the time while I was in Mexico and one night as we were hanging up he says, “I love you.” I didn’t see it coming and I just hung up.
OMG, I am freaking out. He’s never going to say it again, why did I just hang up on him. The next day were talking again, neither of us brought it up and we’re saying good bye to each other. This time I’m waiting though, and boom, he says it again, “I love you.” Of course, I tell him “I love you,” back.
Many people thought it was too soon in our relationship or that we were too young but I really did love him and I know that he loved me.
Boyfriend & Girlfriend
We were totally in love and the next couple of months in high school we we’re always together. He was my high school sweetheart and school was just better with him around.
We graduated in 2008, I started college and he helped move all of my stuff into my new dorm. He would visit me often all the way in Irvine and I would come home on the weekend to see him. Eventually, towards the end of my freshmen year in college we began fighting more and ended up breaking up.
I was of course devastated. I can’t even begin to describe the pain that I felt. It’s honestly the worse feeling and I couldn’t hold back the tears. My college roommate took care of me and always tried to cheer me up. It was a very difficult time for me and I just wanted to be his girlfriend again.
On & Off
Eventually, we would get back together but we were on & off through my college career. I want to share this with you because I often here, OMG your relationship is perfect. Well, the truth is we also had our ups & downs and there was a time that I was really depressed when we weren’t together. I wouldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep and honestly I would party to not think about the pain. I was just trying to fill in the void.
We of course would still talk during this time like like any couple that had been together for such a long time. But one of the last times we went a couple months with out speaking. That was the first time that had ever happened to us and I missed him so much. I gave in and called him one night. And we ended up talking for hours.
Getting back together, for good
After our first phone call after a couple of months of not talking we made plans to see each other. The emotions I had that night were crazy. I remember shedding tears at dinner just looking at him because I was so happy. After that, we kept hanging out and decided it was time to make it public again, tell our families, and tell our friends.
My parents had seen me go through so much that he knew that he would need to talk to them first. He came over and I didn’t tell my parents he was coming. They hadn’t seen him for an entire year and I never spoke about him to make it easier for me. He walks in the door and I can hear my dad greet him but he was completely shocked. It was like he had seen a ghost, like what are you doing here.
My mom comes to my room, tells me he’s here and is looking at me so confused. We sit down in the living room and him and my dad are just catching up talking about life but my finally my dad asks him “what’s going on?”
He tells him that he loves me and he knows that he hurt me but he wants to get their blessing to get back together. My dad says yes so quickly I thought it was so funny. My mom however was very apprehensive. She had seen me cry, she had forced me to eat, and she also was hurting with me. So she asked him, “How do we know you won’t break up again, we can’t go through that any more.”
Btw this whole time I’m sobbing on the couch and Cesar is doing all the talking. He tells my mom “I understand why you feel like that but I love your daughter, I want to be with her. ” He said some other things but it’s hard to remember everything.
Of course we got the blessing and from his family too.
Happily ever after
After we got back together we never took a break again and our relationship grew stronger than ever. Of course we still had arguments but it was different, we were in a better place.
Eventually on November 23, 2014 he proposed and asked me to be his wife. We got married the following year on September 12, 2015 which was #thebestdayever.
I wanted to share the full story because every relationship has their trials and no relationship is perfect. I am so thankful that I found the love of my life at such a young age and love our life together.
With out being cheesy, he completes me. He gets me and is ultimately my best friend. We have literally grown up together because we first got together when were were 17!! Some people ask, “Do you count the time you were broken up when you say how long you’ve been together?”
Of course I do. That is a part of our story and that time a part made our relationship stronger. This November will be 11 years with my high school sweetheart and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
As usual, thank you for stopping by and reading part 1 of our love story. Maybe I’ll share part 2, the proposal, and part 3, the wedding.
It’s been real.
