If you have dark hair like me and want luscious blonde hair/balayage then you have probably thought about the damage to your hair first.

I get so many questions about how “healthy” my hair is because my hair is so blonde. Other girls wanna know if they go just as blonde, will their hair feel like straw or silk. The truth is ANYTIME you bleach your hair, it will be damaged. Depending on your stylist, how patient you are, and the history of your hair will ultimately decide how damaged your hair will end up.

I thought about the last two years and what I did to keep my hair as healthy as possible. I want to give you 4 tips from going from dark to light while keeping your hair healthy as can be.

Please note: I have inserted  links to the products mentioned and will receive compensation if you choose to buy items using the link provided.

Tip #1: Choose a hair stylist that has transformed hair from dark to light already.

This is important because you want someone who has experience in this type of transformation. If you look at a stylists’ insta feed and you only see pretty pictures of girls with already blonde hair, that does absolutely nothing for you. Finding someone that has several transformations will really help because it won’t be their 1st rodeo.

My personal hair slayer @itsalwaysbecks has several transformations under her belt and did a great job in transitioning my hair.  Check out her Instagram page to see all of her other work!

Also keep in mind that when choosing a good hair stylist you will have to invest in your hair. It if sounds too expensive then what you are used too, its most likely because the other person doesn’t have the same experience or knowledge aka they will damage your hair.

Tip #2: GO SLOW & BE REALISTIC

I know you hear this one so many times but it’s really important.

When you have really dark hair its a long process when you want to keep your hair healthy.

Picture below was from Easter 2 years ago.

Again, it took me to two years to get my hair blonde! It also depends on the history of your hair and if you have had box dye or any other color before. All of that is important when lifting the hair.

Here is a slight breakdown of what I did to my hair in the last two years to achieve my blonde hair!

-partial balayage

-full balayage

-low lights

-baby lights

Some girls get impatient with the first session and then go back to dark, literally killing the process. Also, don’t be that girl that goes dark in the winter and then wants be full blown blonde again by spring break LOL  I was that girl but I stopped going back and forth which helped reach my #blondegoals

Tip #3: Use quality shampoo & conditioner

It may scare you to pay so much money for just shampoo and conditioner but it makes a huge difference. You want sulfate FREE Shampoo, so look out for that if you want to choose your own!

I use REDKEN Color Magnetic Shampoo & Conditioner on the regular.

I also use Fanola Purple Shampoo to keep my hair toned when needed. I do not use purple shampoo everyday.

Also, try not to wash your hair every day. This goes for all types of hair but more so bleached hair.

Dry shampoo is legit my absolute best friend and helps keep oily hair away.

Tip #4: Weekly mask treatments

There are plenty of masks out there that all work really well to help your hair stay strong and hydrated.

I really like this Moroccan Oil Hydrating mask and it makes my hair smell/feel AMAZING!

You can also go natural and get 100%Extra Virgin Coconut Oil! That also works great as well.

In order to see a difference you must be consistent and do it once a week or once every two weeks. You can do it on a Sunday, slather your hair, put it in a bun and let it be.

You can also overdue it so make sure to not do it every night!

Those are probably the best tips I can give you to keep your healthy.

Yes, staying away from hot tools is also important. But lets be real. If you need to do it for work everyday then its not really an option. I definitely still used my curling iron all the time, blow dried my hair often, and sometimes used a straightener.

And a final & Professional Tip from the talented @itsalwaysbecks:

“A tip I would have is to be patient and take good care of your hair. What I do behind the chair is my work, but you as a client also have your own homeowork to do, conditioning treatments, good products, and patience. Trying to rush the process will only damage your hair. Be patient, and if you come to me, I’ll make sure your hair is beautiful every step of the way.”

I hope you found these tips helpful and I’m excited to see your blonde hair SOON, well not too soon because we don’t want to damage it but you get what I mean!
